How much value can you have?
It’s 9:40 p.m. You’re searching for flights from New York to Paris in business class for next May. The cash price shows $4,862 roundtrip on Air France. Instead of paying cash, you check award space through Flying Blue, the joint program of Air France and KLM. Bingo, you see saver-level space for 60,000 miles one way.
You log into your Citi ThankYou account and transfer 60,000 points at a 1:1 ratio. Within minutes, the miles post. You book the seat.
Changes to the Citi ThankYou program in 2026
The most important shift is the permanent addition of American Airlines AAdvantage as a 1:1 transfer partner. For U.S.-based travelers, this fills a gap Citi had for years. You can now move ThankYou points directly into one of the largest domestic airline programs without workarounds or indirect transfers. See our complete guide to Citi ThankYou points.
At the same time, Aeromexico Rewards exited the program. While that reduces Citi’s direct SkyTeam presence, it does not materially weaken the overall lineup.
If you redeem points through Citi’s travel portal, you typically receive about one cent per point. That sets a baseline. But the potential upside comes from transfers. Airline programs price awards differently. Some offer lower mileage costs on certain routes. Others provide access to alliance partners that expand your options beyond a single carrier.
Understanding Citi’s transfer partners allows you to:
- Access three major airline alliances
- Compare award pricing across programs
- Avoid unnecessary surcharges
- Target higher-value redemptions
For most travelers, the airline partners will drive the majority of redemptions. The hotel programs can provide value in specific situations, particularly with Choice or Wyndham, but they require more selective use.
Types of Cards Citi Offers
Citi offers two primary card types: earning flexible ThankYou Points or earning airline-specific miles through co-branded partnerships.
ThankYou Rewards
These are Citi’s transferable currency cards. ThankYou Points can be redeemed for travel or transferred 1:1 to select airline partners, depending on the card.
- Citi Strata EliteCard: This is Citi’s premium ThankYou card. It currently offers 75,000 bonus points after $6,000 in purchases within 3 months of account opening. It earns elevated multipliers on bookings made through Citi Travel and includes up to $300 in annual hotel benefits. An annual fee applies.
- Citi Strata Premier Card: This is the primary mid-tier transferable points card. It currently offers 60,000 bonus points after $4,000 in purchases within 3 months. Points transfer to airline partners at a 1:1 ratio. It includes a $100 annual hotel benefit on eligible bookings. The annual fee is $95.
- Citi StrataCard: This no-annual-fee option earns ThankYou Points and currently offers 20,000 bonus points after $1,000 in purchases within 3 months. It includes bonus categories and a 0% introductory APR period on purchases and balance transfers. Transfer access may be limited without pairing to a premium ThankYou card.
Co-Branded Airline Cards
These cards earn miles directly within a partner loyalty program rather than ThankYou Points.
Citi issues several cards with American Airlines:
- Citi® / AAdvantage Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard: Currently offers 80,000 AAdvantage miles after meeting minimum spending requirements. The $99 annual fee is waived for the first 12 months.
- Citi® / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard: Currently offers 100,000 AAdvantage miles after $10,000 in purchases within 3 months. It carries a $595 annual fee and includes Admirals Club lounge access.
- Citi® / AAdvantage Busines World Elite Mastercard: Designed for small businesses, this card offers 65,000 AAdvantage miles after meeting the spending requirement. The $99 annual fee is waived for the first year.
Citi Cashback Cards
These are Citi’s fixed-value rewards cards. Cash back posts at a set rate and can be redeemed as a statement credit, direct deposit, or check. No transfer partners are involved.
- Citi Double Cash Card: This card earns 2% cash back on all purchases — 1% when you buy and 1% when you pay. There are no category caps and no annual fee. It currently offers a $200 cash back bonus after $1,500 in purchases within the first 6 months. It also includes a 0% introductory APR on balance transfers for 18 months.
- Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi: Available to Costco members, this card earns 5% cash back on gas at Costco and 4% on other eligible gas and EV charging purchases, on the first $7,000 combined per year, then 1%. It earns 3% on restaurants and eligible travel, 2% on Costco purchases, and 1% on all other purchases. No foreign transaction fees apply. A Costco membership is required.
ThankYou cards focus on flexible redemptions and transfer partners. Co-branded cards focus on airline-specific benefits and mileage earning.
Rules
If you want to build a Citi strategy that lasts, you need to understand how Citi thinks about approvals and bonuses. The rules are not as centralized as Chase’s 5/24 policy, but they still matter.
The 48-Month Rule
The most important rule applies to Citi’s American Airlines cards.
If you earn a welcome bonus on an AAdvantage card, you generally cannot earn another bonus on that same product for 48 months.
The key detail is that the 48-month clock applies to the individual card, not across all Citi products. Earning a bonus on one AAdvantage card does not automatically prevent you from earning a bonus on a different Citi card unless the offer terms specifically say so.
In most cases, the clock starts when you receive the bonus, not when you open the account. That distinction matters if you are planning long term.
Before you apply, read the offer language carefully. Citi is strict about enforcing this window. Personal experience: I have missed out on a Citi welcome bonus because I applied without tracking when I last received one. I assumed I was eligible, turns out I was one month too early. Oops!
How Many Cards Can You Have?
Citi does not publish a maximum number of cards you can hold.
In practice, you can have multiple Citi cards at the same time, including both ThankYou cards and airline cards. Approval depends on your income, credit history, and the total credit Citi has already extended to you.
If you already have significant credit with Citi, they may deny a new application or move credit from an existing card to approve you.
Application Velocity
Citi tends to be sensitive to how quickly you apply for cards.
Data points suggest you should space personal applications at least eight days apart, and avoid submitting more than two personal applications within roughly sixty-five days. These are not official published rules, but they are patterns that consistently appear.
If you apply too aggressively, you increase the likelihood of denial. Spacing out applications usually leads to smoother approvals.
Once-in-a-Lifetime Bonus?
Citi does not use strict lifetime language like American Express.
Instead, eligibility resets based on the specific product and its 48-month window. After that period passes for a given card, you may qualify for the bonus again.
Always check the exact language in the offer before applying.
Financial Review
Citi financial reviews are not reported as frequently as those from Chase or American Express. For most cardholders using their accounts normally, this is uncommon.
Preapproved Tools
Before you submit a full application, you can check whether Citi has prequalified offers available for you.

Citi allows you to view personalized offers online. When you check for prequalification:
- Your credit score is not affected. It is a soft inquiry.
- You can see estimated APR and offer details before deciding to apply.
- Your Social Security Number is required for identity verification.
Prequalification means Citi has identified you as a potential match based on your credit profile. It does not guarantee approval. If you proceed with a full application, Citi will still conduct a formal credit review.
If you are an existing Citi customer, you can also log into your account and review any targeted offers available in your dashboard.
Annual Fees
Card Types
Citi structures annual fees based on card tier and benefits.
- $0: Many cash back and entry-level ThankYou cards, such as the Citi Double Cash® Card and the Citi Strata℠ Card.
- ~$95: Mid-tier travel cards like the Citi Strata Premier® Card.
- $350–$595+: Premium and airline lounge cards, including the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card and the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®.
Higher annual fees are typically paired with statement credits, hotel benefits, or lounge access. Whether the fee makes sense depends on how much of those benefits you use.
Keeping Track
Annual fees post around your account anniversary each year.
If a card no longer justifies its fee, Citi generally allows product changes within the same card family. For example, you may be able to downgrade a Strata Premier to a no-annual-fee ThankYou card instead of canceling outright.
Product changing can help preserve your credit history and avoid closing an account. However, you will not receive a new welcome bonus when you product change.
Transfer Partners
See our dedicated article on transfer partners here.
The strength of Citi ThankYou Points lies in their transfer flexibility. You can redeem points through Citi Travel at a fixed value, but transferring to airline partners is where higher redemption value is typically found.
Transfers generally occur at a 1:1 ratio in increments of 1,000 points with eligible cards such as the Citi Strata Premier® Card or Citi Strata Elite℠ Card. Once points are transferred, they become the partner’s currency and cannot be moved back to Citi.
Citi does not currently offer direct hotel transfer partners comparable to Hyatt. Its value is concentrated in airline programs.
Airline Partners
Citi partners span multiple global alliances and independent programs.
- Air France–KLM Flying Blue (SkyTeam): Frequently used for business class to Europe. Monthly Promo Rewards can discount award pricing.
- Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (SkyTeam partner access): Often used to book Delta premium cabin awards at competitive rates.
- Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer (Star Alliance): Required for booking Singapore Airlines premium cabin awards that are not released to partners.
- Qatar Airways Privilege Club (Oneworld): Useful for booking Qsuite business class using Avios.
- Avianca LifeMiles (Star Alliance): Known for competitive pricing on international business class with no fuel surcharges.
- Etihad Guest: Occasionally offers niche partner sweet spots.
Citi’s partner list allows access to all three major alliances through indirect booking strategies.
Our Take
Citi ThankYou Points are strongest when transferred strategically. The ecosystem does not rely on hotel sweet spots but instead on airline redemptions, especially for international premium cabins.
If you track the 48-month rule, space your applications, and avoid aggressive cycling, Citi can form a stable and flexible rewards foundation alongside other issuers.
