Citi is cutting a legacy perk on converted Barclays AAdvantage cards. Starting October 25, 2026, cardholders who moved from a Barclays AAdvantage Aviator card to the Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard® will lose 2X AAdvantage miles on car rentals and hotels.

This follows Citi’s broader push to become the sole issuer of American Airlines’ cobranded lineup. If you want the full picture of how AAdvantage miles work across cards, check our American Airlines AAdvantage guide.

What the Change Covers

Converted Barclays accounts currently carry a 2X bonus on car rentals and hotels. That rate came from the old Aviator card structure. Citi is removing it entirely on October 25, 2026.

Once the change lands, those purchases drop to the base earning rate. Other categories on the card stay put for now. The standard 2X AAdvantage® miles at restaurants, including takeout and delivery, and 2X AAdvantage® miles on eligible Rides and Rails™ purchases remain part of the Globe card’s earning structure.

Who Actually Benefits

Nobody gains from this change. It’s a straight cut, not a swap. The best case is a converted cardholder who rarely rents cars or books hotels outside AAdvantage channels. They’ll barely notice.

The worst case is a frequent renter who leaned on that legacy 2X rate. Losing it means falling back to 1X on spending that used to earn double. If you’re in that group, it’s worth comparing other cards in Citi’s lineup, including the recently updated Citi AAdvantage Executive Mastercard refresh.

Our Take

This is a quiet downgrade, not a headline event. It only matters if you’re one of the converted Barclays cardholders. If that’s you, shift car rental and hotel spending to a card that still rewards it. Otherwise, there’s nothing to act on here.
